12 Year Old Among Michigan's Youngest Murder Suspects

Accused of stabbing another boy on the playground, prosecutors have charged Jamarion Lawhorn, age 12, with open murder in the death of Michael "Conner" Verkerke, age 9.  Michigan has witnessed several similar high-profile juvenile cases in recent years as well.

From MLive:

"GRAND RAPIDS, MI – As an 11-year-old, Nathaniel Abraham became Michigan’s youngest killer when he fatally shot Ronnie Greene, 18, of Pontiac, in 1997.

Convicted of second-degree murder, he was held in a juvenile facility until he turned 21, and was released.

Stunningly young to kill, Abraham and his crime gained national attention.

Kentwood's Jamarion Lawhorn, 12, has gained notoriety of his own - just a child himself, he allegedly killed a boy three years younger.

He is accused of fatally stabbing Michael [']Conner['] Verkerke, 9, at a playground in a mobile home park on Bellewood Street SE, near 56th Street and Madison Avenue. He was arraigned Tuesday, Aug. 5, on a charge of open murder by Kent County juvenile court referee Marie Kessler.

If convicted, Lawhorn could face a blended sentence that could keep him locked up in a juvenile facility until he turns 21, then go before a judge to see if he should face an adult sentence, too.

He is believed to be the youngest murder suspect in Kent County - one of the youngest in the state, too. But he is not alone.

In 2010, 13-year-old Keishawn Mann pleaded guilty to second-degree for killing his mother’s boyfriend in Kentwood.

A 13-year-old, Charles Lewis Jr., was convicted in the 2010 killing of Shayla Johnson, 19. Lewis and seven older men allegedly kidnapped her from her Lansing home before his father shot and killed her.

In 2009, DeMarco Harris was only 12 when he killed Trisha Babcock, 24, in a holdup. Police said the victim was sitting in the driver’s seat of a park car in Detroit when she was shot in the chest while struggling with Harris.

Within a week last year, a 13-year-old Flint boy was charged with murder in the shooting deaths of his brother, Kareem B. Walters and his girlfriend, Alexis Frazier, 28, and a 13-year-old girl was accused of attempted murder after she allegedly stabbed her older sister.

Abraham, who killed at 11, was released from custody after turning 21. He has since been imprisoned on drug charges."
